Holiday Decorating Safety PSA.flv

WASHINGTON, D.C. As the holiday season approaches, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is urging consumers to make safety a factor in holiday decorating. Whether it is careful candle placement or checking the warning label on the holiday lights, simple safety steps can go a long way in preventing fires and injuries this year.

Annually, during the two months surrounding the holiday season, more than 14,000 people are treated in hospital emergency rooms due to injuries related to holiday decorating. In addition, Christmas trees are involved in hundreds of fires resulting in an average of 15 deaths and $13 million dollars in property damage annually. Candle-related fires lead the list of hazards averaging more than 12,000 a year, resulting in 150 deaths and $393 million in property damage.

Holiday decorating-related fires and injuries most often involve defective holiday lights, unattended candles and dried-out Christmas trees, said CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum. We are providing this list of 10 simple safety steps to help keep your holiday home safe.

Use the following ten safety tips when decorating this year:
Trees and Decorations
1.When purchasing an artificial tree, DO look for the label “Fire Resistant.” Although this label does not mean the tree won’t catch fire, it does indicate the tree is more resistant to catching fire.
2.When purchasing a live tree, DO check for freshness. A fresh tree is green, needles are hard to pull from branches and do not break when bent between your fingers. The bottom of a fresh tree is sticky with resin, and when tapped on the ground, the tree should not lose many needles.
3.When setting up a tree at home, DO place it away from heat sources such as fireplaces, vents, and radiators. Because heated rooms dry out live trees rapidly, be sure to monitor water levels and keep the stand filled with water. Place the tree out of the way of traffic, and do not block doorways.
4.In homes with small children, DO take special care to avoid sharp, weighted or breakable decorations, keep trimmings with small removable parts out of the reach of children who could swallow or inhale small pieces, and avoid trimmings that resemble candy or food that may tempt a child to eat them.
Lights
5.Indoors or outside, DO use only lights that have been tested for safety by a nationally-recognized testing laboratory, such as UL or ETL/ITSNA.
6.Check each set of lights, new or old, for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, or loose connections. Throw out damaged sets. DONT use electric lights on a metallic tree.
7.If using an extension cord, DO make sure it is rated for the intended use.
8.When using lights outdoors, DO check labels to be sure the lights have been certified for outdoor use and only plug them into a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protected receptacle or a portable GFCI.
Candles
9.Keep burning candles within sight. DO extinguish all candles before you go to bed, leave the room or leave the house.
10.DO keep lighted candles away from items that can catch fire and burn easily, such as trees, other evergreens, decorations, curtains and furniture.

What should I do for Christmas decorations?

Posted by admin on Jan 3, 2010 under christmas holiday decoration

This will be the first year I will be able to actually celebrate christmas as a giving holiday. We do not have much in decoration, but do have some funds to work with… So Im wanting to get some nice decorations. Indoors first.

If there’s anything you can make with things that you already have, then I would not waste the money on decorations! There are so many needy people in this world, and some do not have warm clothes or even food to eat, or a place to live! Pine cones or greenery from any nearby pine trees, ribbons, bows, artwork, snowflakes cut from paper, old christmas cards, foil on styrofoam, lace, decopage, fabric, and many more ideas for decorating! Books and Magazines, Friends, and Family! God Bless! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Love always to you!

Where to go in Grand Rapids for Christmas decorations?

Posted by admin on Dec 31, 2009 under christmas holiday decoration

I want to go downtown Grand Rapids, MI, with a date to look at its holiday decorations. Where would you recommend that we go in the city?
Also, if you recommend a place in Holland, that’d be okay, too.
In other words… Where is Grand Rapids most beautifully decorated?
I also would not like to spend a ton of money.
Hmmm, I mean it more like; which streets in Grand Rapids are the most decorated?

I know, people are always saying "google it." But really, I googled it to see if I could get you some answers, and there are so many places! So go to google, they have some great places, that aren’t too expensive.

Christmas Decorations?

Has anyone put up any Christmas/Holiday decorations yet?

Not me. I always decorate the day after thanksgiving….but hey, if you’re not having thanksgiving at your house, no harm in putting them up early. Enjoy. it only comes around once a year.

What are your favorite magazine websites to shop for inexpensive gifts, holiday decorations ,house stuff ,etc.

Posted by admin on Dec 22, 2009 under christmas holiday decoration

For example: Terrysvillage.com, abcdistributing.com, orientaltradingcompany.com- sites like that. I am looking for cheap halloween, christmas, and other holiday decorations online.

I like to shop all year for sale stuff to give as gift for holidays & birthdays, & am on a tight budget as well.
I love www.collectionsetc.com & they often have online sales & free shipping
Also I go to www.americangreetings.com
for a small annual fee you can download all kinds of greeting cards & also I love the ‘Create & Print’ section for craft stuff & making gift bags & projects
If u r a member you can add up to 2 other people at a time to your account FREE. (Nice perk or gift if you have other crafty friends)

I saw a great idea on Oprah once: she showed a Christmas tree
After Christmas the family took off the ornaments & decorated it for New Years with hats, streamers, noisemakers, horns, etc
Then for February; hearts & cupids & valentines
And in March : St Patricks stuff
April; Easter stuff
May; spring stuff etc…etc…etc
You get the picture
It was really cute & you don’t have to ‘put up the tree’ every year
(shop "after the holiday $ale$ " for next years stuff)

Another good place to shop www.lakeside.com
however not as good for last minit shopping ( longer ship time & backorders) but still nice gifts & inexpensive!

Also I like to print photos from www.flickr.com
large sized & printed on glossy then framed in clearance priced frames from my local Walgreens
At ‘flickr’ you can find beautiful photos of ANYTHING
My sister’s got a wall of framed Butterflies & Flowers

Sorry about the long answer ( but Frugal is my middle name)
and I hope you can use some of my tips!

What are your thoughts on holiday decorations and separation of church and state?

Posted by admin on Dec 18, 2009 under christmas holiday decoration

I mean any holiday, not just Christmas. Personally I love decorations and I think they are fun. I am a Christian and I would not be offended if we had decorations that represented other religious holidays. That would mean more fun and diverse decorations. I would like to hear from people who disagree with me and tell me why I’m wrong. I think as a Christian my ideas on the topic are a little biased and I need help to see the other side of the argument.
Thanks for your help!

I think it’s sad to take away holiday decorations and stuff, not only in town but especially from younger children in schools and such.
So I think that if that’s the way they want it they should start the separation of church and state by making government workers work on holidays. Let’s see how well that goes over then. After all why should government workers get all Sundays and holidays off?
Make them work a few Sundays, Easters and Christmases and see what happens.

Grrrrr makes me so mad!!!!
